Feeling trapped in your job?

Feeling trapped in your job is one of the worst feelings in the world. You feel completely stressed out, that your life is one big struggle and that you have no options. Your judgement becomes impaired leading to snap decisions which only aggravates your situation. All you want to do is hide under the covers or run away.

Make a list

Getting your thoughts out on paper helps you look at your concerns from a rational perspective instead of an emotional one. So write down all the issues you have with your current job. If you hate your boss, write it down. If you hate your colleagues, write it down. If you feel that you are overworked or bored, write it down. Put every single niggle or issue down on paper.


Reflect and analyse

Having put all your thoughts on to paper, it is time to analyse why you feel the way you do. Look at each item on your list and consider the reason behind it. For instance you may feel like you hate your boss, but what is the reason behind it? Perhaps you feel like he doesn’t value you or his micro-managing ways make you feel suffocated. Consider whether the real reason is actually your own insecurities or beliefs.


Consider your change solutions

Even though your instinct may be telling you to run for the hills take a step back and see if there is anything you can do to improve your current situation. If you are not coping with your workload speak to your boss and see if they can help you. If you hate your colleagues, be friendlier towards them and they will probably start being friendlier towards you.

Be proactive in resolving your problems. Sometimes it just takes an attitude or behaviour adjustment to vastly improve your own situation.


Get clarity before you quit your job

Get out of your head and talk to someone. If your thoughts are constantly on your problems and you feel like you are in a hopeless situation thinking about it just makes it worse. It doesn’t help you come up with a solution.

The problem is that a job change may not make you happier and deep down you know this. Discussing your situation and options will help you gain clarity on whether you should quit your job and change your career.
